Guizhou province and Guiyang city

Guizhou province is situated in Southwest China. The total area of Guizhou is 176,000 km2, of which 61.7% are mountains, 30.8% hills and 7.5% flat land between mountains. The average altitude of the province is about 1170 meters. The annual temperature averages 15 ¡æ and the rainfall per annum are 1100-1300 mm. Guizhou's scenery is beautiful and its climate is temperate, without severe winters or very hot summers.


Guiyang City, The ¡°Forest City¡±

Guiyang is the capital and the center of politics, economy, science, education and culture of Guizhou Province. The city is an important transportation and telecommunication hub in Southwest China. It is also a new and modern city with comprehensive industries.
Situated in the central Guizhou and on the east slope of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Guiyang is in a Chinese transitional zone from east plain to west plateau, between 106°07¡ä-107°17¡äE and 26°11¡ä-27°22¡äN. Its total area is 8034 km2 including 98 km2 of urban area. The terrain is up and down, between 506.5m and 1762.7m above sea level. The relative height difference is 1256.2m. The hilly land accounts for 89.7% of the total area. The average altitude of the city center is about 1000m. Karst landform develops well, making up 73.3% of the total area.
Guiyang falls within a subtropical climate zone that is temperate and humid without severe winters or hot summers. The annual temperature averages 15.3¡æ. The mean temperature of the urban districts is as follows: 1¡æ-5¡æ in January and 20¡æ-24¡æ in July. The rainfall is 1200mm per year. The duration of sunshine is 1354 hours. The relative humidity throughout the year is more than 77% and the frost-free period is 270 days. During the conference, it will be early summer, 20-25¡æ, with moderate humidity and rainfall.
This moist, subtropical climate has brought an abundance of flowers and trees to the city, earning it the name "City of Gardens" or ¡°Forest City¡±. Guiyang has a total forest area of 275 hectares, accounting for 31.7% of the city's total land area. There is a green belt around the city, which is about 1 to 7 km wide and 70 km long, proving a green shield for the city.

By the end of 2007, Guiyang has a total population of 3.598 million.
